The United States Bone and Joint Initiative (USBJI) is dedicated to raising public awareness and to increasing research of musculoskeletal diseases in the United States. Basic and clinical research in the musculoskeletal diseases performed by young investigators is not keeping pace with the increasing burden of these diseases in the U.S.

The USBJI Research Committee offers a grant mentoring program consisting of workshops to provide early-career basic and clinical investigators an opportunity to work with experienced researchers in our field to assist them in securing funding and other survival skills required for pursuing an academic career.
This grant mentoring program of workshops is open to promising junior faculty or senior fellows or post-doctoral researchers that have been nominated by their department or division chairs. It is also open to senior fellows or residents that are doing research and have a faculty appointment in place or confirmed. The workshops take place in the Spring and Fall. The unique aspect of this program is the opportunity for attendees to maintain a relationship with a mentor until their application is funded.
Kevin Bozic, MD, MBA, one of the young investigators sent the USBJI the following message after attending the first workshop. "I wanted to thank you for including me in an outstanding seminar this past weekend in Chicago. Although I have attended similar workshops in the past, the quality of the faculty, the lectures, and the interaction amongst the faculty and the participants was unsurpassed. I want to applaud you both for coming up with the idea, and for working hard to make this program a reality. As a young investigator who aspires to become an independently funded health services researcher, I couldn't ask for better training."

What is the Bone and Joint Initiative? Orthopaedic surgeons, rheumatologists, physical therapists and medical and patient health associations worldwide are joining together for Bone and Joint Initiative to advance understanding and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders through prevention, education and research. Musculoskeletal Conditions have an enormous impact on society:
- In the U.S. alone, musculoskeletal conditions are estimated to cost over $950 billion annually
- Musculoskeletal impairments are the number 1 category of reported chronic impairment and rank number 1 in visits to physicians' offices
- 1 in every 2 Americans is treated for chronic musculoskeletal impairment or a musculoskeletal injury in a given year
- Musculoskeletal conditions are among the most common medical problems in the U.S. population: - One in two women and one in four men over the age 50 will have an osteoporosis-related fracture in her/his remaining lifetime - While the risk of arthritis rises with age, more than one-half of the 40 million Americans with arthritis are currently under the age of 65 - Each year, 3 of 5 physician visits for injuries are related to the musculoskeletal system
- Musculoskeletal conditions and deformities deprive children of a normal development
- Worldwide, musculoskeletal conditions are the most common cause of physical disability and severe long-term pain
Goals of the Bone and Joint Initiative:
- To raise awareness of the American people of the growing burden of musculoskeletal disorders on society;
- To promote prevention of musculoskeletal disorders and empower patients through education programs;
- To advance research in prevention, diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders; and
- To improve diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders.
